This passage recounts Herod’s reaction to Jesus’ growing fame, believing that John the Baptist, whom he had executed, has been raised from the dead. The story then reflects on how John’s fearless proclamation of truth about Herod’s unlawful marriage led to his imprisonment and, ultimately, his beheading at the request of Herodias and her daughter. It’s a sobering reminder of the cost of living into God’s Dream, especially when speaking truth to power.
What is attractive about God's Dream?
John the Baptist’s unwavering courage and commitment to God’s truth are deeply inspiring. His willingness to confront Herod’s sin, even at great personal risk, shows the boldness of someone fully aligned with God’s dream for justice and righteousness. This passage also highlights the power of a life lived with integrity, as even Herod, despite his flaws, respected John as a holy and righteous man.
What is challenging about God's Dream?
The injustice of John’s death is deeply challenging. How do we reconcile the senselessness of his execution with the hope of God’s Dream? Herod’s moral weakness, swayed by pride and public pressure, forces us to reflect on the dangers of compromising values for the sake of appearance. This passage challenges us to consider how far we are willing to go in standing for truth and whether we have the courage to risk comfort, reputation, or safety to align ourselves with God’s vision.
What is transformative about God's Dream?
This passage transforms our understanding of what it means to live for God’s dream. John’s life and death show that participating in God’s vision of justice often requires sacrifice, yet his witness continues to inspire generations. During Advent, this story calls us to reflect on the cost of discipleship and to find hope in the knowledge that even in loss, God’s dream is advancing. John’s faithfulness reminds us that our actions, however small, can echo far beyond our time.
Pray:
God of justice, your servant John stood boldly for your truth, even in the face of death. Grant us courage to live with integrity and to speak truth in love. May our lives reflect your dream of justice and righteousness. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
