In this passage, Jesus speaks for the third time about his impending suffering and death, but the disciples continue to misunderstand. James and John request positions of honor in his glory, prompting Jesus to teach about servant leadership: “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” As they approach Jericho, a blind man named Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus for mercy, and Jesus restores his sight. Bartimaeus immediately follows Jesus on the way.
What is attractive about God's Dream?
Bartimaeus’ faith and persistence are deeply inspiring. Despite being rebuked by the crowd, he cries out all the louder, trusting that Jesus can heal him. Jesus’ response is full of compassion—he stops, listens, and restores Bartimaeus’ sight. The teaching on servant leadership is also compelling, reminding us that God’s Dream is one of humility, service, and care for others. This passage highlights the beauty of following Jesus with open eyes and hearts.
What is challenging about God's Dream?
The disciples’ ongoing misunderstanding of Jesus’ mission is challenging, especially in light of their request for honor and status. It forces us to confront how often we seek personal gain rather than aligning with God’s dream of service and humility. Additionally, Jesus’ call to drink the cup he drinks reminds us that following him requires self-sacrifice and a willingness to endure difficulty for the sake of others.
What is transformative about God's Dream?
This passage transforms our understanding of discipleship as a journey of both faith and action. Bartimaeus, once blind, now follows Jesus “on the way,” symbolizing the clarity and purpose that come from trusting in Jesus. Jesus’ teaching on servant leadership calls us to redefine greatness, finding true fulfillment not in power but in self-giving love. During Advent, this passage invites us to open our eyes to God’s dream and to follow Jesus with renewed faith and humility.
Pray:
God of mercy, your Son teaches us to serve with love and to follow with open hearts. Open our eyes to your dream, and give us the courage to walk in faith and humility. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
