This passage contains several significant teachings from Jesus. He speaks about the permanence of marriage, blesses children brought to him, and has a poignant encounter with a rich man who struggles to let go of his wealth to follow Jesus. Jesus then teaches his disciples that it is hard for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God but assures them that with God, all things are possible. Finally, Jesus promises that those who sacrifice for God’s dream will receive blessings in this life and the life to come.
What is attractive about God's Dream?
Jesus’ blessing of children is a beautiful and tender moment. He welcomes them with open arms, affirming their value and reminding us that God’s dream is for all, especially the vulnerable and overlooked. His assurance that “with God all things are possible” is a hopeful declaration, inviting us to trust in God’s power to transform even the hardest parts of our lives. The promise of blessings for those who sacrifice for God’s dream reflects the richness and abundance of life lived in alignment with God’s vision.
What is challenging about God's Dream?
The encounter with the rich man is deeply challenging. Jesus’ call to sell everything and follow him confronts our attachment to wealth and security, asking us to trust in God’s provision instead of material possessions. His words about how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God force us to reflect on what might be holding us back from fully participating in God’s dream. Are we willing to let go of what we value most to follow Jesus?
What is transformative about God's Dream?
This passage transforms our understanding of what it means to live richly. Jesus reveals that true wealth is not found in possessions but in relationships, faith, and alignment with God’s dream. His teaching about blessings in both this life and the life to come reminds us that God’s dream offers abundance, not through accumulation but through love, generosity, and trust. During Advent, this passage calls us to reexamine our priorities and to embrace the freedom and joy of living for God’s vision of justice and renewal.
Pray:
God of abundance, your Son teaches us to let go of what holds us back and to trust in your provision. Help us to live richly in your dream, prioritizing love, generosity, and faithfulness above all else. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
