Subversive Obscenity
A graduate research project that seeks to address a problem in interpreting the scenes depicted on the Warren Cup: the fact that they do not fit neatly into the dominant model of understanding sexuality in the Roman world. The cup helps to demonstrate how that model does not adequately address the full experience of same-sex relationships in early imperial Rome. It presents an alternative narrative that is not based on themes of violence and domination, defies single conventional meanings, and presents a minority perspective that challenges twenty-first century notions of sexuality just as it would have challenged those of its original audience.
