This passage begins with Jesus correcting the disciples, who have been arguing about who is the greatest. He teaches that true greatness lies in serving others, using a child as an example of humility and openness. Jesus then warns them against causing others to stumble in their faith and emphasizes the seriousness of sin, using vivid imagery about cutting off anything that leads one astray. Finally, he speaks of being “salted with fire,” urging the disciples to maintain their distinctive character as followers of God’s dream.
What is attractive about God's Dream?
Jesus’ redefinition of greatness is deeply hopeful. He elevates humility, service, and care for the vulnerable—qualities that are often overlooked in a world that prizes power and status. His embrace of a child as an example of what it means to live in God’s Dream reminds us of the beauty of simplicity, trust, and openness to God’s love. The image of being “salted with fire” is also inspiring, suggesting that our faith, while tested, has the potential to preserve and bring flavor to the world.
What is challenging about God's Dream?
Jesus’ warnings about sin and stumbling are stark and unsettling. The imagery of cutting off hands or feet and being thrown into unquenchable fire forces us to confront the seriousness of sin and its impact on others. This passage challenges us to examine our own actions and their consequences: Are we nurturing faith in others, or are we causing harm through carelessness or pride? Additionally, Jesus’ call to put others first confronts our natural tendencies toward self-promotion and comfort.
What is transformative about God's Dream?
This passage transforms our understanding of leadership and discipleship. Jesus flips worldly values on their head, teaching that true greatness is found in humility and service. His warnings about sin and the call to be “salted with fire” remind us that living into God’s Dream requires both intentionality and a willingness to be refined. During Advent, as we prepare for the coming of Christ, this passage invites us to embrace humility, serve others with love, and strive to reflect God’s dream in every aspect of our lives.
Pray:
God of humility and grace, your Son shows us that greatness is found in service and care for others. Teach us to walk in humility, to nurture faith, and to reflect your dream through lives of love and compassion. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
