"When the Day of Pentecost Had Fully Come..."

Tomorrow, the church year leads us away from the mount of the Ascension to the upper room of Pentecost. As I prepare for our 10:30 service at the Church of the Apostles, I’ve been reflecting on the specific, steady rhythm of our Book of Common Prayer.

There is a unique beauty in the classic language of our liturgy. The collects and the creeds root us in a tradition that spans centuries. But the challenge of our faith is always the same: ensuring that the words we pray within these walls are the same words that we live in our lives once we step back out into Halifax’s West End.

Tomorrow, we will hear these words from Jesus: "As the Father has sent me, I send you."

It is easy to treat our faith as a set of instructions and commandments. But the feast of Pentecost reminds us of something far more radical: the Spirit writes the law of love directly onto our hearts. God is transforming us from passive observers into a living gathering of apostles.
